Telnet server (23)

this is used for remote login, but it is not secure as SSH.

server side

1> #yum install telnet-server telnet -y

2> #vim /etc/xinetd.d/telnet

disable=no [ by default disable so enable it as putting no value ]

:wq

3>#service xinetd restart

4>#chkconfig xinetd on

Client side

1># yum install telnet -y [ telnet client ]

2># telnet 192.168.122.10
enter user name and password

[ by default root user is disable, so you can login to any other limited user using telnet ]

Enable root login via telnet

1> #vim /etc/pam.d/remote
comment the below line by #

#auth required pam_security.so

:wq

2> #service xinetd restart

[ now you can able to telnet root user ]

Telnet display the banner from /etc/issue.net file which has useful OS into display by telnet. So change it for security
reason.

#vim /etc/issue.net
welcome to telnet

:wq

==================================================
you can close telnet session by pressing ctrl + ] and then type q.
OR
ctrl + d => logout.
==================================================

other useful

1> set login message in /etc/motd
2> remove system info from /etc/issue for security.
3> check installed os version
# cat /etc/system-release
OR
#cat /etc/redhat-release
